about

The single version of "Dirty Summer" is an earlier mix of the song completed in February of 2013. It was originally a sort of test to see how we wanted to record our next album, 'You Knew' (May 2013), and at one point it wasn't even going to be on the final track list at all. This song was recorded about 6 months before the rest of the album, and it's actually more like what we do live. There are plenty of more subtle mixing differences between the single and album version - for instance, we re-recorded the piano fill at the top (the single is Tamir, while the album version is actually a brief Maurice piano moment).

The alternate version of "Alligator Teeth" was also part of this recording experiment. The differences between this recording and the version on our debut album, 'Alhambra,' are much more stark. We tried out all sorts of weird tuning and noise at the top, and told Claire to "sing like Kate Bush." From reverse piano chords and looped drums to simply jacking up the tempo, we basically took this song on a totally more aggressive and darkly groovy trip than anything on 'Alhambra.' The djembe has been subbed out for a snare, the horn section is twice as big, and we can't forget the "witchy vocals."
